About

Margartistwix.JPG

Artist and calligrapher Margaret Davis has been creating art and calligraphy since kindergarten. Her media include gouache watercolors, Sumi ink, 22-karat gold leaf, and linoleum blockprint. Her works incorporate playful themes and imagery inspired by nature, myth, Medieval manuscripts and tapestries, and Egyptian tomb paintings.

Margaret was brought up in Galesburg, Illinois, where her mother, an artist and art teacher, instilled in her a love of artistic creation. She began the study of calligraphy in high school, when she first became enamored of the beauty of Medieval illuminated manuscripts and the Book of Kells. Her college and post-graduate work included courses in art, composition, graphic design, printmaking, Medieval art history, and illustration. She studied calligraphy with John Prestianni, an elected member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, and most notably with Carla Tenret of Albany, CA. Trips to the tapestry galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cluny Museum led to an ongoing exploration of the use of text within painting -- another of her inspirations in this regard is artist Kit Williams, creator of "Masquerade."

Margaret has been working professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 10 years, reaching an international clientele. Corporate and celebrity clients have included Andrea Seabrook of NPR, Malin Giddings, Grace Cathedral (San Francisco, CA), the San Francisco Early Music Society, the Society for Ritual Arts, Dr. Stanley Krippner, East Bay Innovations, Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine, and Psychic Reader Magazine. She is a current member and past Vice President of the Diablo/Alameda Chapter of the National League of American Pen Women.
